Energy + Lighting

Lighting is a major user of electricity. It also generates heat, contributing to cooling loads that require even more electricity for air conditioning. Therefore, improving the energy efficiency of lighting has wide-ranging benefits and is one of the easiest ways to start saving electricity and money. Energy efficient options include compact-fluorescent lamps (CFLs), which use roughly one-third as much electricity as incandescent bulbs and can operate at very low temperatures, and LED (light-emitting diode) light sources, which have a very long life and do not contain mercury.
