Pressures on timber supply are especially acute for high-visibility, solid-wood products like window sash and moulding, which have traditionally been produced from old-growth trees. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) moulding made from post-industrial wood wastes is an excellent substitute for paint-grade mouldings?and some MDF is available with non-formaldehyde binder. Because of its consistent quality and economical price, MDF moulding has become increasingly popular. Other options included finger jointed mouldings and domestic plantation grown mouldings from poplar trees.
