Fiber-cement building materials earn green points for durability. The new generation of what was once an asbestos-containing material, fiber-cement is made from portland cement, sand, clay, and wood fiber. In addition, composition siding products are environmentally attractive because they utilize low-grade or waste wood fiber (such as newsprint or sawdust), or strands of fast-growing wood mixed with binding agents and finishes. When durable, they can be an affordable green option. You can also choose natural wood siding in cedar, redwood, or cypress, as long as the wood comes from certified, well-managed forests.
