Most conventional caulks and adhesives off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) since formaldehyde and other chemicals are added to enhance their performance or extend their shelf life. They pose the greatest threat to indoor air quality during and immediately after installation. High quality substitutions, which have reduced or eliminated VOCs and are therefore lower in toxicity or nontoxic, are available for these products.
